Reclaiming Our Magic — Why Black People Need to Practice Hood
Share
What Is Hoodoo? Separating Truth from Myth**
For too long, our people have been made to fear our own power. Hoodoo — the sacred folk magic of African Americans — was labeled evil, dangerous, and demonic. But the truth is, Hoodoo is our birthright. It’s a collection of African spiritual practices blended with Native American, European, and Biblical elements, created by enslaved Africans in the Americas.
Unlike popular belief, Hoodoo isn’t the same as Voodoo or Santería. It isn’t a religion, but a system of practices passed down through generations for protection, healing, justice, love, and survival. Hoodoo belongs to us. It’s the whispered prayers, the jars under the bed, the protective amulets in grandma’s drawer. It’s magic with the earth, the spirits, and our ancestors.
This series is about reclaiming what’s ours — not for trend or profit, but because we need it now more than ever.
